Marriage & Family Counseling

Sometimes referred to as “couples” counseling or “relationship” counseling, this type of therapy involves you and your spouse or partner, child, and/or the family. It can be in combination with individual counseling when necessary. The initial focus is usually on developing skills for communication, self-control, and understanding. By nature, Human Behavior Institute’s treatment programs are designed to help not just the individual, but also the family and the community and would require their support and involvement in the treatment process.

During therapy sessions, there are many factors to consider when dealing with the family system, including cultural backgrounds, beliefs and values, the personalities of all family members, and even involvement of the extended family (grandparents, aunts, and uncles). Some family members may change their behaviors more than others, but all members take responsibility for the problems and use the family strengths to help them deal with their problems. Your therapist may assign “homework” from time to time, to implement at home. For example, parents may be asked to delegate more responsibilities to their children or implement a consistent discipline structure.

Your family and your therapist discuss goals and the length of time expected to achieve those goals. Not all members of the family attend every session; therefore, scheduling follow-up sessions may vary.
